At Pampa Dental Arts, Dr. Mohr likes to start seeing children around age three, unless parents have specific concerns early on. At age three, children can start to feel comfortable sitting in the dental chair for an appointment, and we'll begin with an exam to count their teeth. We'll incorporate teeth cleanings when they feel comfortable. Our goal is to build a friendly, trust-based rapport with your little one so they feel comfortable, safe, and even excited about visiting their dentist.
Caring for Your Child's Smile
Did you know that oral health care begins at home during infancy, before the first teeth even arrive? Parents can begin oral care with those first feedings by wiping their child's gums with a warm washcloth afterward. This helps your baby get used to oral care and removes any bacteria left in their mouth after feedings.
After their first teeth arrive, parents can begin brushing with an infant-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush. Parents may even choose to incorporate a small smear of toothpaste that's safe for infants to swallow. This helps your child get used to daily brushing.
Around age three, when they learn to spit in the sink, you can incorporate fluoride toothpaste into their routine to help build and strengthen developing teeth. Your child will need your assistance with brushing and flossing (eventually) until around age eight.
